Book Review – Horror Movie By Paul Tremblay

The unnamed narrator is recruited by is old college friend Valentina, for a part in her visionary amateur Horror Movie. The movie written by Valentina’s friend Cleo is all about a group of friends, teenage outcasts who set out to make a monster. The character the narrator will portray the Thin Kid, which is why they want him he’s tall lanky he doesn’t even need acting experience his character is the strong silent type. In the summer of 1993 at a condemned school in Rhode Island the cast and crew film the movie. The narrator is only getting his pages the night before so for him his story as the Thin Kid is happening almost in real time, he’s attempting to inhabit the role and basically going full method. Boundaries are tested then crossed, physical and mental health is in jeopardy, there are injuries on set and then the worst happens, which prevents the movie from ever being finished or released.

15 years later and the narrator is the only living member of the production, and he’s been living on fan conventions and hopes of guest spots, constantly in talks for this and we have hopes for that, the type of niche fame that only and almost was star can have. The movie that never was has developed a cult following an intense fascination with the whole production has sprung up online particularly after three completed scenes from the movie and the entire screenplay leaked on to the internet, “Horror Movie’ fans want to know everything about their movie. Now a reboot is actually being made from the original screenplay and the new production want the Narrator, for at least part of the role of Thin Kid because he still has the mask, the original mask from the original production and they’ve been waiting for this for decades.

The story is spread over three timelines and interspersed with scenes from the movie and this is one hell of a read. This reads like psychological at house horror, full of suspense and heady with atmosphere and tension I could not put it down and plowed through it in one sitting. I loved the Narrator, he is a captivating character who’s speaking directly to the reader and it feels like you’re almost part of a conversation in parts of the book. I really loved all of the 90’s nostalgia through out the book, those are the Horror movies that I fell in love with, they are my generation of scares if you will so when something is set in that era I almost half love it immediately. I liked that the whole way through the story you’re guessing about who the monster really is and what is actually happening right up until the last moment. The whole story is disturbing, disorienting and beautifully descriptive I loved the sense of unease that permeates the whole story, this slow burn of the story unfolding is so good to read. Amazing Read.
